Thursday, February 23 – LA AIR: INSTEREO  – 8 PM
LA AIR is a new artist-in-residence program that invites Los Angeles filmmakers to utilize EPFC resources in creating a new work over a four-week period. INSTEREO, the empathic image exchange between Ursula Brookbank and Christine Alicino, presents their latest collaboration realized with the support of the LA Air Artist-in-Residence program at EPFC. Over the past lunar year moving images were exchanged every seven days and at year’s end arranged into a film/video projection occupying the realm of their correspondences. The evening includes a screening of short films selected by INSTEREO from the collection of EPFC. FREE!

Saturday, February 25 – MANIPULATED IMAGE PRESENTS “GUTTURAL!” – 8 PM
(merriam-webster.com: Guttural... marked by utterance that is strange, unpleasant, or disagreeable)
There is an unbridled energy and natural rawness to Martin Back's video, in which he uses his mouth, a contact mic and a webcam to create a raucous performance. Paulo Barros's percolating geometric abstractions are inhibited only by their forced rectangular enclosures. Hey-Yeun Jang's work penetrates the “in-between,” the deep cracks that are left unexplored in familiar realities. Niclas Hallberg and his collaborator Stina Pehrsdotter give voice to those who have come to feel shame in a civilization that has alphabetized and codified proper conduct. Wilfried Agricola de Cologne's videos are both visually and viscerally penetrating, and his clear observations are potent and commanding. In addition to the above selections from MI's archives, RKDB, a video artist based in Oakland, California will be at the screening for the presentation and discussion of his work. A BFA graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University, RKDB worked off-Broadway and in independent films in New York City, and while working at MoMA as an assistant to the curators for the Jackson Pollock retrospective, he had a revelation that led him to video art. RKDB calls himself an "amateur anthropologist/comparative religion and Jungian student." To the first time viewer, his work may appear absurd, funny, and even irreverent. But after viewing a collection of his work, one will come to understand the degree to which he is obsessed with Jung, ritual, myth and shamanism. RKDB trusts in intuition and the transformative power of inner truths, and sincerely believes that "the dreamlike quality of the moving image is best suited to respond to and enter into a dialogue with the part of the mind that is beyond - and on which floats - the rational sphere." It is not necessarily the "strange" quality of the sound that makes some of these works guttural, but the restless audacity of the artists in breaching the boundaries of the agreeable, the proper, and the familiar. Friday, March 2 – LOS ANGELES TRANSGENDER FILM FESTIVAL – “BEST OF FEST” – 8 PM
The Los Angeles Transgender Film Festival will screen "Best of Fest" short films from their third annual film festival. Featuring Jury Award winner GETTING OFF by Meliza Banales & J. Saturday, March 3 – DEAR DIARY – 8 PM
Students from EPFC’s 2012 winter youth intensive course Dear Diary will present and discuss projects created on standard 8mm film during the month of February. This advanced, four-week intensive class immersed students in the history and practice of personal / diary filmmaking. Through screenings and discussions students explored diverse forms that personal filmmaking has taken, from amateur home movies to the avant-garde. The students were encouraged to incorporate the cameras into a daily filming practice, drawing on their everyday lives. FREE!

Thursday, March 8 – KAMERAPFERD – 8 PM
Kamerapferd is the synonym of the two directors, Stephan Müller and Erik Schmitt, since 2010. Under that name they have produced a range of highly visual and often unconventional short films, as well as the feature length documentary (The Solartaxi, 2010). Their latest short film, Now Follows (Nun Sehen Sie Folgendes, 2010), winner of the German Short Film Award, was presented at Cannes by the FFA and German Films, and is representing German short films all around the world on the Soirée Allemande and the Next Generation Short Tiger roll. Erik Schmitt was initially born in 1980 in Mainz. He quickly started to study the many forms of communication in Geneva, Munich and Melbourne but was successfully lured into the capital. He completed his studies of communication sciences at the FU Berlin. At some point he learned to use the camera not only as walking stick, and started KAMERAPFERD together with Stephan Müller. Stephan Müller was born on the 22nd of May 1981. The same day he saw the light of day. Discovering photography and short films, he traveled around the world and quickly became addicted to creating things. Cardboards, a jig saw, a hammer and some wood are always around him. Under the name of KAMERAPFERD he's been working together with his symbiotic film friend Erik Schmitt since 2010. In 2012, Stephan and Erik are staying at the Villa Aurora, a German artist residency in Los Angeles. During their stay, they will work on several projects, including two short films, and different film scripts.

Saturday, March 10 – CONFINED MADNESS IN FILM: BUNKER 731 & TITICUT FOLLIES – 8 PM
Explore the theme of madness in confined spaces presented through both short and feature film media. Screened publicly for the first time, Kerrie Scher and Jacob Scarpaci’s short “Bunker 731” tells the story of a married couple trapped in a bomb shelter, struggling with their only remaining option for survival. The short will be coupled with “Titicut Follies,” Frederick Wiseman’s rare and controversial 1967 documentary about a Massachusetts state hospital and the treatment of its criminally insane habitants. Curated and introduced by Rena Durrant. Short Q&A with writers/directors after “Bunker 731.” 

Thursday, March 15 – KREN / LOWDER / SCHALLER – 8 PM
"Much has been written about the abstract, serial, musical, structural or mathematical nature of Kurt Kren's films, their affinity to painting, poetry or twelve-tone music; but too much concentration on their structure and rhythm has eclipsed the films' objectivisation, their almost documentary quality … appreciating Kurt Kren's films is not a question of dissecting his technique, recognizing their richness of innovation or analyzing their rhythm. To understand these film it is not necessary to see through them but to feel and perceive them as real.” (Hans Hurch). Rose Lowder and Robert Schaller, like Kurt Kren, have developed their own idiosyncratic practices that have in common with one another the use of rigorously formal editing structures. In distinctly personal ways, these formal concerns are used as jumping off points to explore a more critical and aesthetic relationship to the landscape. “Underlying these studies is a search for meaningful ways to work with film regarding our contemporary society controlled by multinational economics. As the totalitarian environments of urban landscapes become more and more uninhabitable, I seek, against the grain in our "virtual" space age it seems, a more human physical home.” (Rose Lowder). All works projected from 16mm, including: 31/75 Asyl, 37/78 Tree Again, 3/60 Bäume im Herbst and 32/76 An W+B by Kurt Kren; Roulement, Rouerie, Aubage and Coulerurs Mecanigues by Rose Lowder; Sea View Movie and Tree of Life by Robert Schaller.

Friday, March 16 – LOS ANGELES FILMFORUM presents JON JOST’S CHAMELEON – 8 PM
A scathing portrait of the Hollywood/LA arts milieu of the late 70’s, Jon Jost’s Chameleon (1978, 90 minutes) follows the amorphous day of its lead character, an Armani-jacketed peddler of high-class dope, fraudulent art, and preening postures suited-to-fit the changing victims. Saturday, March 17 – CINEMA INDIGENE RETURNS! – 8 PM
All over the world Indigenous people are picking up cameras and telling their stories. Join curator Eve LaFountain for this installment of the screening series that highlights the best and most exciting works of contemporary Native made cinema and see how Native people are representing themselves, their cultures and histories on screen. Discussion of the film to follow.

Thursday, March 22 – NEW WORKS SALON – 8 PM
Several local artists will present new in-progress or recently completed works. Sean Batton and Kelsey Brain will present a 16mm film comprising footage of Occupy Los Angeles's two-month encampment at City Hall. Marcy Saude presents her in-progress Alternative Strategies #1, in which Filmmaker Robert Nelson talks about the house he and William Wiley built by hand in rural Mendocino County. Mark Toscano will present two recent 16mm films, Rating Dogs on a Scale of 1 to 10 (2011) and Demonstration (2012). Also, Rick Bahto will present sketches towards a documentary on the composer Mark So, Pablo Valencia will project a collection of Super 8 miniatures, and Hayley Elliott will present a developing cut of hand-processed Super 8 film.

Friday, March 23 – AYMAN SAMMAN – 8 PM
On March 23rd, The ADD Channel is launching Season One of "The Virtual Zone". This hilarious and sometimes offensive web series features real online classified ads, posted anonymously by real people, and reenacted by really brilliant actors. It's real and it's virtual. Episodes include characters such as: an angry, demanding, and desperate woman; a tongue masseuse; a sex-crazed douche bag; and a woman on parole who is excited to talk about her episode of cops. Thursday, March 29 – LA AIR: MARGIE SCHNIBBE – 8 PM
LA AIR is a new artist-in-residence program that invites Los Angeles filmmakers to utilize EPFC resources in creating a new work over a four-week period. Our March resident, Margie Schnibbe, will be working on a new project titled Friends and Neighbors: “to celebrate my ten-plus year relationship with the Echo Park Film Center I will create a series of short super-8 portraits of friends and neighbors in my Silver Lake/Echo Park community. The residency will culminate with a screening of these portraits along with a selection of short films created by my friends and neighbors.”

UPCOMING CLASSES

YOUTH Spring Session: MOVE IT! (Limited Enrollment)
12 Sessions on Thursdays 4:30 - 6:30, beginning March 8

In this course students will learn about urban planning and transportation issues, and how these themes have shaped Los Angeles over history and continue to impact our lives today. Using Super 8mm film, students will work individually or in groups on projects that will explore and respond to these issues, with the final project a collaborative multi media live performance.

Open to local youth ages 12 – 19; no filmmaking experience necessary. All program equipment, materials and instruction provided free of charge by EPFC. The class is limited to 20 students. Students interested in participating must write a one-page essay on why they want to take the class, what aspects of our city interest them most, and what they hope to learn during their time at EPFC. Essays are due MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27. Students will be notified if they have been selected by THURSDAY, MARCH 1. A one-hour MANDATORY orientation session for all interested students and their parents/guardians will be held at Echo Park Film Center on TUESDAY, MARCH 6th at 7:30PM. Instructors: Rick Bahto, Alee Peoples, Kim Strouse, Walter Vargas.

Saturday, March 10 – INTRO TO SUPER 8 FILMMAKING & HAND-PROCESSING – 12:30 – 5:30 PM
Using the classic home-movie camera, students will explore the history, application and tender sophistication of small format filmmaking. This one-day workshop includes basic camera operation, shooting techniques and hand-processing. No previous filmmaking experience necessary. All equipment and materials provided by EPFC.
Instructor: Rick Bahto. Tuition: $75/$60 EPFC members.

Saturday, March 17 – INTRO TO FINAL CUT PRO – 1 – 5 PM
This one-day class opens the door to the power and majesty of a digital editing program that is fast becoming the industry standard. All equipment and materials provided by EPFC. Instructor: Will O’Loughlen. Tuition: $60/$50 EPFC members.

Saturday March 24 & 31 – STOP MOTION EXQUISITE CORPSE ANIMATION WORKSHOP! – 1 – 4 PM
Exquisite corpse is a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. Each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule or by being allowed to see the end of what the previous person contributed. During this two Saturday course, the class will create a collaborative animated work, using stop motion. Each student will be given the first and last frame of their animation, and then be able to create whatever they like within these two frames. Students should be prepared to shoot the first day, so bring anything you need with you to class. Supplies will be provided, so you don't have to bring anything, other than a desire to animate! Instructor: Nancy Jean Tucker $75/60 EPFC members. Class limited to 6 students.
